When tobacco heiress Doris Duke died in 1993, she left a $1.2 billion estate and no natural heirs. She left most of her money to charity and willed $5 million to her butler and friend Bernard Lafferty. Lafferty also was named co-executor of the estate.
But a court-appointed investigator looking into Duke's death has raised questions about how she died. The report by investigator Richard Kuh said that Duke's doctor caused her death with a fatal overdose of morphine.
Kuh's investigation was ordered by a judge who has been trying to settle a legal fight between several of Duke's heirs. Kuh was asked to investigate allegations that Duke was murdered.
